The Leidos Military & Veterans Solutions Health Group is currently seeking a full-time research Data Scientist to support the Warfighter Performance Department at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA. This position will support the Sleep, Tactical Efficiency, and Endurance Laboratory (STEEL) with data management, data analysis, and coding for research studies aimed at improving warfighter performance.
This position will be responsible for the design and development of methods, processes, and systems to consolidate and analyze structured and unstructured, diverse, and large data sets from disparate sources. This position will work closely and collaboratively with Principal Investigators, project managers, research assistants, and subject matter experts to accomplish research aims. They will develop and use advanced statistical concepts, algorithms, querying, and automated processes to clean, model, integrate and evaluate complex datasets for practical application. The ideal candidate should be familiar with the principals of related disciplines such as Machine Learning, Predictive modeling, Statistical Analysis and Hypothesis testing. Identifies meaningful insights, and interprets and communicates findings and recommendations. May develop information tools, algorithms, dashboards, and queries to monitor and improve on research processes. Maintains awareness of emerging analytics and big-data technologies.
The ideal candidate will be motivated, detail-oriented, able to take initiative, and work well both independently and as part of a team. The ideal candidate should have a deep interest in cultivating best practices in programming (e.g., writing efficient, function-driven code; experience using the Tidyverse, and some understanding of the principles behind its philosophy) and maintaining complicated project structures. Proficiency in using R is strongly preferred (but Python and Julia would also be valuable). An aesthetic appreciation for what good code looks like is also a big plus. Experience working with various data types (such as data from surveys, devices, physiological wearables, computer-based tasks, etc.) is required. Must be able to model the Leidos Mission, Vision, and Values at all times.
Specifically, the candidate will be required to:
Develop technical solutions that require collaboration with internal experts (e.g., Principal Investigators, scientists, and other members of the research team), deep analyses and understanding of impact on end-product/solution.
Build and maintain an automated data pipeline for data ingestion, pre-processing, extraction, cleaning, and storing for later analyses. Converge data from multiple and diverse sources.
Refine research methodology, construct databases, provide coding and programming expertise for research studies, apply statistical methods, and interpret results to answer study questions.
Access various secondary data sources to extract relevant data and construct comprehensive, project-specific datasets.
Lead data management processes, including data verification, cleaning, quality assurance, and merging.
Perform data manipulations and transformation on raw data using R to create analytics-friendly datasets for research projects (e.g., tidy datasets). Additional experience with Python or Julia would also be desirable.
Maintain and update documentation on all processes and procedures, including data dictionaries and codebooks.
Conduct statistical analyses using R (primarily, but Python and Julia would also be desirable). Familiarity with a broad range of statistical techniques, to include traditional (e.g., logistic regression, standard least squares regression, analysis of variance, etc.) and machine learning techniques (e.g., random forest, CART, etc.). Experience with more specific kinds of techniques, such as survival analysis, equivalence testing, structural equation modeling, Monte Carlo simulation, Bayesian analysis, among others, would be highly desirable.
Develop statistical plans for research proposals and research protocols, determining appropriate subject numbers required for successful study completion.
Contribute to the preparation of study deliverables, presentations, reports, and publications.
Develop custom visualizations for presenting data to stakeholders using software tools (e.g., ggplot, etc.)
Master’s Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or other quantitative field.
Experience querying databases and using statistical computer languages: R, Python, SLQ, etc.
2 or more years of experience with coding and programming for research studies.
2 or more years of experience in conducting statistical analyses for human subjects research projects.
Experience in literate programming practices (e.g., using R Markdown to produce reproducible reports with embedded code; automating this process).
A drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques.
Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain a Secret Clearance.
Able to travel locally, nationally, and internationally as needed for meetings and conferences.
3 or more years’ experience in programming, coding, and conducting statistical analyses for human subjects research projects.
Coding knowledge and experience with several languages: C, C++, Java, Python, or Julia for research projects.
Experience in research with military populations.
Active Secret clearance.
