Job Description:
The Defense Health Operation of Leidos is currently looking for an Acoustic Engineer for the Submarine Medicine and Survival Systems Department at the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL) in Groton, CT. NSMRL conducts research and investigates the effects of medical, psychological, and performance issues associated with the health and performance of naval personnel in operational and non-operational settings.
Primary Responsibilities
The ideal candidate shall:
Engage in research on human exposure to sounds and vibrations.
Administer acoustical, psychoacoustic, and vibration tests in support of NSMRL’s Regional Hearing Conservation Program of Record (RHC POR) research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E), and generate and modify computer programs when necessary.
Test, evaluate, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and calibrate equipment.
Build and assemble RDT&E apparatuses.
Research solutions to novel problems, as they arise.
Travel to support projects both CONUS and OCONUS, so a valid passport (or the ability to obtain one) is required.
Document all work (i.e., in manuscripts, technical reports, technical memorandums, posters, computers, laboratory notebooks, documentation binders, etc.).
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or other very closely related degree with 5+ years of experience in acoustics.
Coursework in signal processing, instrumentation, and basic statistics is required.
Proficiency in MATLAB and LABVIEW
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Windows based computers
The candidate will be required to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level. Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Engineering or other very closely related degree with 2+ years of experience in acoustics
Experience in a research setting;
A willingness to take on other tasks, possibly outside one’s area of expertise, in order to contribute toward project completion is highly desired;
Experience in the US federal government system.
