Job Description:

The Federal Health Operation has an opening for a System Administrator located at Ft. Detrick, MD.  The position is with the Enterprise Information Technology (eIT) Project Management Office (PMO), supporting medical research activities. Candidate will work for the Product Development and Sustainment Lead.

Perform maintenance and review on all production eIT PMO products, ensuring that they are running as expected.  Work with the project’s Information Assurance (IA) Engineer that all appropriate IA updates are planned and updated as needed following the Change and Release Management process. 

PRIMARY DUTIES:

Administers the functionality and efficiency of one or more operating systems deployed within the Development, Test, Production and Management Environment. Set up and maintain administrator and service accounts. Maintain system documentation, tuning system performance, installing system-wide software, validating, and implementing critical system patches. Take direction from Product Lead, Sr. System Administrators, and Sr. DBAs. Maintain Backup and Recovery process providing backup and recovery for deployed products. Follow developed policies, procedures, and standards related to the use of computing resources, overall strategy, design, implementation, and operational aspects of multiple systems, operating environments, and related software. Participate in the development of schedules, plans, and implementation of system upgrades. Monitor and control computer operating systems; set up and maintain more than one type of computer system. Analyzes system faults, monitors log files, troubleshoots, and runs diagnostic tests on operating systems and hardware to detect problems. Evaluate and install software during various phases of testing.  Review and prepare documentation for system test and installation of software.  Participate in preventive maintenance of operating systems, as well as repair of operating system problems. Administer systems/environment solutions for multiple projects with varying schedules and interface with vendors for solution of trouble calls. In conjunction with Senior Database Administrator, responsible for database development and maintenance, including database definition, monitoring of log files, structure, long-range requirements, PMO operational guidelines, security, and integrity controls. Manage and maintain multiple databases across multiple platforms and computer environments including, but not limited to, database analysis, design, installation, configuration of database server and associated client software, database and application turning and performance monitoring, and general technical expertise.  Responsible for database security support such as routinely executing IA patches to be compliant with IA Controls, and resolve or document vulnerability findings. Interact with peers on a daily basis and during internal Engineering Review Board meetings. Frequent interaction with customers and/or function peer group leads and managers. Maintain a safe workplace ensuring that he/she is aware of and observes appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations. Employee may be required to attend safety training relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the facility Safety Officer. Assist with software regression testing as needed. Provide assistance to staff in developing or reviewing test scripts, especially those related to verifying the functionality of the management servers. Ability to perform tasks with minimal supervision.

MORE SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Minimum Daily Duties:

Backup management – make sure that jobs ran successfully and tapes are available for the next backup job

Review disk space report to verify that no systems are out of hard drive space

Check Splunk alerts as well as locate and review available Splunk reports

Check VMware alerts

Check datastore sizes

Review logs

Review and remediate STIG items

Additional Duties:

Understand and be able to explain to others the Backup and Restore process

Understand and be able to explain to others the Disaster Recovery process

Track the Backup tapes and let lead System Administer know when more tapes will be needed approximately 3 months in advance

Deploy windows patches

Deploy new Medical dictionaries

Review CR/CP/I&Q plan for every change that impacts Sys Admin team

Make updates to GPO objects

Monthly Duties Document Maintenance Responsibilities:

Routine Maintenance Work Instruction

Hardware/Software Inventory – Make correct, then maintain

Backup Tape inventory – Make correct, then maintain

Create and Maintain Change Requests/Change Proposals through completion.

Basic Qualifications

Training and Certification completed as required per DoD, eIT PMO, and contracting agency. CompTIA Security+ certification required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

BS degree and less than 2 years of prior relevant experience. Experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.

CompTIA Security+ certification required. Position requires Microsoft MCP or equivalent.  Certification must be obtained within 6 months of starting the position. Experience in Microsoft server administration or administration of VMware required. Experience in Oracle database administration or MS SQL Server preferred. Must have excellent English, written and interpersonal communication skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs including Word, Excel, Adobe, and PowerPoint.  Familiarity with good documentation practices. Must be able to successfully complete a background investigation. Must be able to work independently following a brief period of specific technical training. Must be a US Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

Be able to communicate with users and vendor support about problems with the system. In-depth knowledge of DoD Acquisition process per DoD 5000.75 Agile methodology

Pay Range:

Pay Range $50,700.00 - $78,000.00 - $105,300.00
