We are seeking a Materials Scientist to join our team in Albany, OR. This work will involve a multi-disciplinary, scientific, and technically-oriented national laboratory team, participation alongside other data scientists, engineers, geologists, and computer scientists that produces technological solutions for America’s energy challenges. The Materials Scientist will have the Ability to assist with and /or conduct alloy related research with but not limited to iron, aluminum, nickel-based alloys. Will assist with and/or conduct melting and casting operations, which include creating molds for casting. Will be responsible for working with the NETL Alloy team to conduct data collection and curation and analysis. Will provide input for and/or write publishable papers/ Manuscripts.

- Apply data to analysis within the context of scope and direction, and clearly report results
- Author and/or co-author reports, manuscripts, and articles suitable for publication
- Participate and possibly present research results in company and client meetings and in externally facing settings.
The successful candidate will work on local and geographically dispersed teams with other engineers, scientists, technicians, subject matter experts, faculty members, post-doctoral students, and graduate and undergraduate students from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds from DOE National Laboratories, other U.S. government laboratories, universities, industries, and research organizations. The candidate will attend regular and ad hoc meetings and contribute to the development of written reports, journal articles, and presentations on findings and innovative solutions in DOE-sanctioned meetings, scientific conferences, and national committees.
Required Education & Experience:
- Ph.D. degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, chemical or mechanical engineering, or a related field with 1+ years related experience
- Experience with structural alloy design and development
- Experience with melting of Ni, Fe or Al based alloys
- Hands-on experience using SEM, EDS and optical microscopy including image analysis
- Experience with hot deformation processes and deformation mechanisms
- Experience with mechanical testing and analysis for structure-property relationship of Ni, Fe or Al alloys
- Knowledge on heat treatment of alloys and effect on microstructure
- Phase transformation, thermodynamics, and physics of metallic materials (in particular, High entropy alloys, and high strength steels).
- Must have a demonstrated record of successfully working independently and with minimum supervision as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural environment and interacting with people with a variety of expertise.
- Must be detail-oriented, able to take initiative, work well both independently and as a member of a team, and be able to balance competing and changing priorities. They will demonstrate competency in scientific and engineering modeling and analysis tools applicable to the specific tasks.
- Must possess strong analytical, oral, and written communications skills, particularly the ability to:
- Analyze and interpret data generated from research, apply data to analysis within the context of scope and direction, and clearly report results
- Author and/or co-author reports, manuscripts, and articles suitable for inclusion in refereed journals
- Present research results in company and client meetings and in externally facing settings
- Hands-on experience with computational materials design (such as phase diagrams)
- Hands-on experience with EBSD
- Experience with TEM data analysis
- Experience with induction melting
