Job Description:
Leidos is looking for mid- and senior-career engineers to support the development and use of numerical analysis tools to design hypersonic weapon concepts.
Candidates will specialize in developing engineering software for hypersonic concept generation and analysis. This includes fast-running aerothermal modeling, computational geometry and meshing, high-speed aerodynamic shape optimization, and system-level multi-objective optimization.
Research new design methodologies for hypersonic and high performance weapons systems. Develop novel analysis techniques in computational fluid dynamics, structural dynamics, heat transfer, and shape optimization, as well as coupled multiphysics analysis tools. Develop software tools that push the envelope of today’s modeling and simulation capabilities.
Exercise the developed tools on offensive and defensive platforms. Perform trade space analysis, evaluating system and mission performance, and use the knowledge gained to guide the design cycle of new weapons systems to maturity. Conduct wind tunnel and flight tests to validate tools and analysis. This well-supported research environment provides the unique and fulfilling experience of developing innovative ideas from concept, through digital engineering, and onto physical test and evaluation.
Work Environment: Be part of a close-knit team of world class experts. The Aerophysics group operates in a small team environment where individual creativity is rewarded, and continuous learning is the norm. Located at Eglin AFB, FL or King of Prussia, PA, have direct access to DOD personnel and work directly with the organizations developing the most advanced weapons systems in the world. The Destin-Fort Walton Beach and surrounding area is home to world-famous beaches and the ‘salt life’ Emerald Cost lifestyle.
Experience Level: Candidates should have Bachelors of Engineering in Aerospace, Mechanical, or similar and a minimum of 8 years experience in industry, or an MS and 6 years experience. Candidates should be able to make programmatic decisions and perform technical tasks with minimal supervision.
Communication Skills: Successful candidates should be able to effectively communicate with Leidos aerodynamics and structural engineers, and interact daily with customers, team members and end users. Must develop a clear understanding of customer goals and objectives and shape work activities to satisfy them. Must present both verbal and written status on a regular basis, and prepare manuscripts for publication at technical conferences and professional journals.
Engineering Skills: Experience with at least one of the following disciplines is required.
• Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools and analysis, ideally experience with hypersonic flows
• Proficient in at least one scripting language, and also at least one compiled language preferred
• Post processing CFD or FEA data
• Operating on supercomputing clusters via the Linux terminal
• Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
• Numerical meshing (CFD or FEA)
• Machine Learning (ML)
• System and/or trade space analysis
• Aerodynamic shape optimization
Clearance: Must be a U.S. Citizen with active Secret clearance.
Desired Knowledge:
Computer Languages: Python or MATLAB/SIMULINK, C++ or FORTRAN
CFD Software: Cart3D, Kestrel, US3D, FUN3D, OpenFOAM
FEA Software: Sierra Tool Suite, LS-DYNA, Nastran, Abaqus, Ansys, etc.
Numerical Meshing: Pointwise, TrueGrid, CREATE Capstone, CUBIT, etc.
ML: TensorFlow, PyTorch, ScikitLearn, MATLAB AI toolbox, etc.
Wind tunnel, flight, or other experimental test planning and safety review experience
