Job Description:

This position will be a flexible, teleworking position majority of the time. Ideally, the chosen candidate will be local to the Maryland area. We will need the Chief Architect to travel to Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD to be onsite from time to time.

The Defense Group of Leidos has a career opportunity for a talented Chief Architect to support a critical modernization effort of the Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS) in order to satisfy the vision of Program Executive Office (PEO) Command Control Communications - Tactical (C3T) and Project Manager Mission Command.

The AFATDS is a multi-service, automated command, coordination, communication, and computing system that provides automated fire support and coordination to all echelons, from firing unit through theater level, at Army, Marine Corps, Naval Firing Platforms, Navy Command and Amphibious Assault Ships, Air Force Operations Centers, and Joint Command and Control Centers. AFATDS enables the automatic application of the Force Commander’s guidance in the Fires Warfighting Function to plan, execute, and deliver effects at all levels of command within the current and future force. AFATDS can automatically tailor the selection of fire support assets (field artillery, mortars, close air support, naval gunfire, attack helicopters, and offensive electronic warfare assets) based on the Commander’s guidance, thereby enabling maximum effective use of all available fire support assets across the full spectrum of conflict.

The program intends to modernize the underlying AFATDS architecture, update the AFATDS front-end to a modern look and feel smart client interface, incorporate advanced embedded training technologies to aid in operator initiated system instruction and refresher training, significantly update critical cybersecurity protections (protection of critical data, validation of critical inputs, protections against insider threats) and perform software conversion of the existing business logic through leveraging existing modernized components, porting all existing Ada code to a modern programming language such as Java and maintain no loss of capability and full backwards compatibility with legacy systems. A summary of this effort includes system architecture design and analysis, system software interface support, design/system engineering, and system integration & test. The program follows waterfall software development, integration and test strategies.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of System Architects in a largely telework environment through standard waterfall phases of development, implementation, integration & test and delivery of a mission critical tactical software application.
  • Establish an architecture vision and expectations consistent with Model Based System Engineering/Digital Engineering that complements and influences the other teams to include SW Development, DevOps, Test, Risk Management, Product Support and Technical Publications.
  • Maintain, track and tailor technical workflows and processes as they apply to all technical activity.
  • Maintain and track how program requirements are successfully implemented through customer acceptance and final delivery; includes addition of new capabilities as well as adjustment to existing functionality.
  • Provide leadership contributions for all activities associated with capability adjustments defined in formal requirements updates, change control board authorization, customer technical exchanges and product verification/acceptance.
  • Lead and/or participate in periodic (daily, weekly, monthly) meetings across all program domains including formal customer sessions and milestones.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 12+ years of related experience or a Master’s degree in a related field with 10+ years of related experience.
  • US citizenship and currently possess an active DoD SECRET security clearance.
  • Knowledge Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)/Digital Engineering (DE) to develop a modular open system architecture (MOSA) for DoD systems.
  • Experience working on computer systems engineering and/or software development programs with functional experience of at least one major Army C4ISR project or program.
  • Have knowledge and experience with DoD/Army plans, policies, standards, and methods aimed at the acquisition and support of software and computer resources for Army systems.
  • Knowledge of DoD architectures, requirements development, verification, test, and system integration to accommodate End-to-End Systems Engineering.
  • Demonstrated management for medium to large software development/sustainment programs.
  • Demonstrated experience presenting to key government customers and industry partners.
  • Experience providing full lifecycle capture and proposal support for task orders to include developing teaming and pricing strategies, providing proposal writing support, and identifying potential candidates in support of anticipated future task orders.
  • Experience providing supervisory oversight and coordinating tasks with subcontractors.
  • Ability to successfully work with and adapt to personnel at all levels in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Able to multi-task, self-assign work, and function in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate via all methods in a professional manner.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, & SharePoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and understanding of UML/SysML and specific MBSE tools such as Rhapsody, MagicDraw, and/or Cameo Enterprise Architect.
  • Understanding of system interface requirements and requirements management.
  • Current Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, Defense Acquisition Workforce Level 3 equivalent certification in Program Management, or Agile Program Management Certifications.

Salary to be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $113,100.00 - $174,000.00 - $234,900.00
