Job Description:
The Laboratory Coordinator supports biomedical research in the Cellular and Immune Based Adjuncts for Casualty Care (CIBACC) department at the Naval Medical Research Unit, San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio, TX. NAMRU-SA conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.
The member plans and implements the overall laboratory policies, procedures, and manages services for the department. Ensures efficient and effective laboratory operations, including department quality control and compliance adherence; ensures that all lab operations run smoothly by scheduling staff, ordering supplies, maintaining health and safety protocols, and training lab technicians. Reports regularly to the department head on the general operational status of the laboratory. The Laboratory Coordinator manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. Ensures that department goals are met and adhering to approved budgets.
Primary Responsibilities
Provides research-related recommendations and support to Government PIs.
Assists Government personnel with day-to-day laboratory operations pertaining to research-related sample storage and equipment maintenance; services shall not include inherently Governmental functions.
Trains non-Government staff to use equipment and properly maintains training files.
Ensures all Government equipment is properly maintained and calibrated in accordance with established protocols and research SOPs; creates purchase orders of equipment as needed.
Ensures that general laboratory supplies are sufficient to support all departmental projects; creates purchase orders of supplies as needed.
Provides recommended technical changes to protocols and SOPs for Government approval.
Provides additional functions incidental to research activities and laboratory.
Coordinates animal research work activities between contract personnel; Assists the department head in scheduling non-Government staff; coordinates activities among multiple projects to include small and large animal models.
Uphold health and safety protocols to include chemical and biologic inventory, authorized users list (AUL) for hazardous chemicals and SAP hazardous waste generation and disposal for the department.
Maintains shared electronic folders of departmental records and archived documents
Performing risk assessments and implements risk mitigation strategies and controls for hazardous chemicals.
Coordinates information pertaining to lab management activities between departmental sections.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a basic or health science with five years of experience.
Must be a U.S. Citizen
Current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS); American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course; American Red Cross CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation); or equivalent. Web based classes do not meet these standards.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in a related field.
