Leidos currently has an opening for a Research Engineer to work at the US Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown, WV.  The incumbent in this position will support research in provide support for characterizing the theoretical and experimental performance of rotating detonation engines (RDE).  NETL operates the water-cooled RDE located in in Morgantown.  Researchers have developed several methodologies utilizing machine learning and computer vision, with plans to expand those capabilities to include additional diagnostics.  The objective of this work is to accelerate the deployment of rotating detonation combustion (RDC) for gas turbine applications and to explore additional power cycles that may benefit from pressure gain attained through near-constant volume combustion associated with detonation.

Responsibilities are functional in nature and performed under limited supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in developing methodologies for characterizing combustion and fluid mechanics in the RDE and exhaust diffuser including the addition of instrumented components in the combustor and diffuser.
  • Develop experimental apparatus to accurately image and characterize the detonation wave in the water-cooled and optical RDE's including the use of multi-spectral and high-speed imaging.
  • Assist in conducting experimental studies associated with the characterizing combustion and fluid dynamics in an RDE including data acquisition, data analysis and data presentation.
  • Develop machine learning methodology utilizing images and conventional combustion diagnostics to characterize detonation wave mode, diffuser pressure loss, diffuser fluid dynamics, and general system performance.
  • Provide support in the addition of class III / IV laser to the hazard analysis and SARS for the optical RDE.  This will include laser training of support personnel, as needed.
  • Data analysis and report writing will also need to be conducted.
  • Active participation in group meetings.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with members of the research team to meet milestones and deliverables.
  • Lead efforts in preparation of technical papers, reports, conference papers, and annual and quarterly reports.
  • Presenting the results of the research at technical conferences and publishing in archival journals.

Requirements:

  • The candidate must have a PhD from an accredited university in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
  • 2+ years relevant work experience.
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining clearance to work on the NETL campus.
  • Experience with both MATLAB and Python is required for data analysis of both transducer-based and image data.
  • Familiar with National Instruments data acquisition hardware and Labview software to couple imaging with transducer-based data acquisition.
  • Experience with developing data-driven models composed of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) using Tensorflow and Keras libraries in Python
  • Specific knowledge associated with machine learning and computer vision.
  • General knowledge associated with safely conducting high-pressure, high-temperature experiments in a laboratory setting, developing/following standard operating procedures and test plans, and reading process flow diagrams. 
  • Document results and develop technical publications using LATEX and MS Word, as well as produce technical presentations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of R&IC SARS processes
  • Experience in the development of research proposals, including identifying metrics in FOAs, developing technical ideas, securing resources, negotiating with potential partners, outlining a viable technical route, work breakdown structure, milestones, budgeting, and technical writing.
  • Preference for experience in a national laboratory environment or industrial R&D lab where safe working practices are paramount
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to represent Leidos or its clients at conferences or public forums or contribute to technical reports and scientific journals.

Program Specific Salary Range: $80K to $90K

Pay Range:

Pay Range $74,750.00 - $115,000.00 - $155,250.00
